As part of the effort of the government make the learning environment a safe haven for all stakeholders, Educational District III recently organised a one-day seminar on security issues for school administrators with the theme; 'Creating Security Awareness in Schools' held at Epe Grammar School, Epe, Lagos. The meeting had in attendance all principals of both junior and senior schools in the District Directors from the District Office Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, Director of StateSecurity Service and Children Social Workers. Mrs. Margaret Solarin, Tutor General/ Permanent Secretary Education District III, stated that the seminar was aimed at improving administrative capacity and update previous knowledge about different issues in schools as the challenges faced by schools in time past is quite different from what schools are facing now. Also, the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mr. Olatunji Disu admonished the principals to have good relationship with traditional rulers and members of the community, and to be proactive by training everyone in the school on safety tips.The commander went further to emphasize the use of Lagos State emergency numbers which are 112 and 767. A social worker and founder Girl Child Enlightenment Foundation, Ajibike Makanjuola charged the principals to be sensitive and watchful over teachers as well as students noting that victims are always afraid to talk and have low self esteem. At the end of the seminar, participants all agreed that all hands must be on deck when it comes to security.
