Lagos State Government says it will continue to prioritize the provision of infrastructural facilities in its schools as quality teaching and learning could only be attained in a conductive atmosphere. The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye who disclosed this today at the 2014 Ministerial Press Briefing to commemorate the third year, second term in office of the administration of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola noted that already no fewer than seven new secondary schools including Agbede Senior Secondary School, Agbede, Ikorodu; Government Senior Secondary School Tarkwa Bay, Eti-Osa; Ojuwoye Junior High School, Mushin; Okun Ajah Senior Secondary School, Okun Ajah, Eti-Osa; Aguda Community Senior Secondary School, Surulere; Aguda Community Junior Secondary School, Surulere and District Junior College, Agege have been established. Oladunjoye opined that government has also constructed new 18-classroom blocks at Ajara Senior Grammar School, Ajara, Badagry, Community Junior/Senior Secondary School, Bayeku-Ikorodu, Ilogbo Elegba Junior/Senior Grammar Schools, Ilogbo and Iba Hosuing Estate Senior Secondary School, Iba adding that 15,000 pairs of dual wooden desks and benches were also procured to public secondary schools. Said she, “government is not unmindful of the fact that quality teaching and learning could only be attained in a conducive atmosphere hence the improvement in the provision of infrastructural facilities in our schools has continued to receive government’s attention. During the period under review, we have rehabilitated the boys’ hostels at Oriwu Model College, Ikorodu; Government College, Ketu Epe; Lagos State Model Junior College, Badore; Lagos State Model College, Agbowa-Ikosi, Epe; Lagos State Model College, Ojo and the girls’ hostel at Government College, Ketu Epe.” The Commissioner explained that government also constructed 14 cubicle toilets in 10 secondary schools at Government Junior Comprehensive College, Agege; Ajara Junior Comprehensive High School, Ajara Badagry; Dolphin Senior High School, Lagos Island, Vetland junior Grammar School, Ifako Iyaiye,; Lagos State Model College, Agbowa-Ikosi, Ikosi Junior High School, Ikosi Kosofe; Imota Community Junior High School, Ikorodu; Ajumoni Junior Secondary School, Iyana Isolo, Mushin and Stadium Senior High School, Iyun Road, Surulere. According to the Commissioner, the Lagos State School Eye Health Programme was launched in order to create awareness on the prevention of blindness as well as reduce the high prevalence of blindness among the primary school students in the state through the elimination of avoidable blindness such as cataracts, refractive error, glaucoma, childhood blindness in primary schools in the state. “ Under this programme, two teachers were trained in each of the 1007 public primary schools in the state with a view to exposing them to the modalities of screening and detecting any child in their school with visual impairment. So far, 2002 teachers have been trained and it is our plan to escalate this programme to all the 20 local government and 37 local council development areas of the state,” she said. Oladunjoye added that government will continue to support and encourage co-curricular activities such as the Schools’ Debate, BRF Quiz competition, Uniformed Voluntary Organization among students stressing that they have undoubtedly improved students’ proficiency skills, enabled them to showcase their logical abilities and to be productively engaged among others benefits. She noted that the state government paid the sum of N508.6million to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for the examination and administrative fees of 47,000 Senior Secondary School III students who sat for the 2014 West African School Certificate Examination in the state. According to her, the payment of the fee was a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to the payment of fees of all SS III students sitting for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations.
