| An 11-year-old pupil of United Christian Primary School, Apapa, Lagos, Master Joseph George, on Tuesday emerged as the winner of the 2010 Spelling Bee competition for primary school category after spelling the word ‘pseudonym’ correctly.
The competition, which is an initiative of the New Era Foundation, founded by the wife of a former Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, also saw Miss Blessing Iyem of Mafoluku Primary School , Oshodi and Master Miracle Okoli of Estate Primary School, Isolo, emerging as the second and third place winners respectively.
The grand finale of the junior category witnessed 57 participants, with the eventual winners emerging after an hour of a keen contest.
The competitors were drawn from the six education districts in the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the state.
Speaking shortly after the emergence of George as the overall winner, the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, noted that New Era Foundation had chosen to mark the 10th anniversary of the competition with the unveiling of a Spelling Bee Dictionary that would guide future participants in understanding the rudiments of spelling. - The Punch |
