Lagos, GTB adopt sports to raise standards in secondary schools |
|
|
| IN its quest to restore some of the enviable standards that was once the hallmark of the public school system in Lagos, the state government is partnering with the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) to boost sport development through the Principals Cup Competition, to achieve its aim.
Set to take place in various parts of the state from January 18 to 22, the competition was, in the past, considered a factor that encouraged healthy rivalry among secondary school students.
To that extent, the state government in conjunction with GTB has, for the past three months, featured over 300 public secondary schools in the soccer competition, which is also geared towards identifying young talents.
Speaking at the commencement of the second round fixtures for the tournament in Lagos recently, the Head of Corporate Affairs, GTB, Mr. Femi Adeniran said that the competition had brought to the fore the need to tap into the huge potentials available in young boys and girls through active participation in youth soccer.
"From Lekki to Mushin, the soccer fever is already catching on both on and off the pitch. With 24 schools participating in this round, we hope that the competition will foster unity and camaraderie. We urge the students to reach for the sky and strive hard so that their dream will come to fruition," he said.
Earlier, in her address, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Sarah Sosan commended the bank's efforts over the years towards the development of the education sector. She also pledged full support and cooperation of the Lagos State Government towards the actualisation of the project.
The Lagos State Principals' Cup is the largest secondary school football competition in Nigeria. It used to be the hunting ground for talents for the national teams. Lagos State has the highest number of secondary schools in Nigeria and is considered a fertile ground for youth development.
The champion will pocket N100, 000, first runner-up gets N75, 000, while third and fourth place winners get N50, 000 and N25, 000, respectively.
The competition was resuscitated by the Bola Tinubu administration in 2005
