School History
"LOCAL GOVERNMENT PRIMARY SCHOOL, MAYUNRE Local government primary school, Mayunre was established in 1955. It has been a very flourishing school since its establishment. It serves about ten (10) different fishing and farming settlements including the host village; Mayunre. The school was flourishing because Mayunre, the host village, served as the meeting center for all the other villages in the area. It was the harbor for all these other villages when their only route to their settlement was the waterway. The construction of a new road from Lagos through Ajah, Eleko, Ibeju to Epe, which has caused the villagers to abandon the use of the waterways, changed the story of Mayunre, and the school to a worse situation that needed to be given special attention. All the villagers that have been converging at Mayunre for onward movement of their goods to places like Ejinrin, Ikosi, Epe, and Lagos now use the new road network. Hence, the villagers are now moving from Epe, Ibeju and other big towns which they use to visit on market days, weekends for special ceremonies, monthly for special festivals such as Ileya, Okosi, and the likes now relocated finally to these big town and now come from the town to work on their farms, water on daily basis. Hence, tribute to King Sunny Ade; the popular Juju musician from this country in one of his records says ""kosi agbe mo loko, ara oko ti dari wale"" that is there are no farmers on our farms, they have all relocated to the towns and cities. The relocation of these farmers and fishermen to the town and cities for diverse reasons, have had a great effects on the villages and the only school, Local government Primary School, Mayunre. All these happened in the last ten or more years, most especially since year 2005. The relocation has taken a toll on the school population. Children from about ten feeder villages were gradually withdrawn or absconded from the school, though education as a discipline considers schools in riverine or rural areas as nomadic schools. However, the rate at which the relocation affected this school and other riverine/rural schools calls for urgent attention from the villagers and the Government for quick redress. Apart from the relocation of these villagers or settlers, which affected the village/settlements and the school, Local Government Primary School, Mayunre, and other schools in the riverine and rural areas of Lagos State, especially in Epe LGEA, have been greatly and adversely affected by other noticeable factors, which are enumerated below: The first factor is the common issue that has existed for the last ten or more years in every school in Lagos State, despite the efforts being made by the state government. This includes a lack of teachers or vacancies for teachers in Lagos schools. The riverine and rural schools are the worst hit by this factor. Local Government Primary school, Mayunre is not spared of this particular factor as teachers were redeployed and retired from this school frequently as the case may be but there has been no replacement in effect for the past seven years. The school activities were left in the hands of the school headteacher and a class teacher and few non-teaching staff. This is a factor which has a drastic effect on the teaching-learning process as these few staffers could not manage the situation effectively coupled with other observable factors like: a. Poor teaching-learning condition in the school. The school buildings are very old and need major repair. b. Toilet facilities; this is not available at all in the school. c. Drinkable water; this is not available in the school, the pupils and staff drink water from the stream in Mayunre village. d. Fence; the school is wide open and has therefore become a thoroughfare for everybody coming and going out of Mayunre village. e. Food and confectionery; there is none of the villagers in this area that provides the services of selling food or confectionery to the inhabitants including pupils and staff. f. Distance between Mayunre and other villages/settlements. Most of the pupils in this school come from villages which are at least about three kilometers (3) away from the school site. There is no good road linking these villages and the school but footpaths which run through a forest, are very insecured for any human being most especially school children who are between six years and twelve years old. Majority of these pupils come from these villages while only few come from the host village: Mayunre. "
