School History
*Pobuna Secondary Grammar School, Poka: A Legacy of Excellence at 55* A Warm Welcome to a Historic Celebration May I rest on all existing protocols to extend a hearty welcome to our distinguished guests, esteemed alumni, and all gathered here today to witness this momentous occasion—the 55th Anniversary of the founding of our beloved institution, Pobuna Secondary Grammar School, Poka. As we commemorate this golden milestone, we give thanks to Almighty God, whose enduring mercies have made this day possible. Fifty-five years is a significant period in the life of any institution. It is a testament to the vision, perseverance, and dedication of those who laid the foundation of this great citadel of learning. Pobuna has not only survived the test of time but has flourished, producing outstanding individuals who have made remarkable contributions to society in various capacities. *A Legacy Rooted in Commitment and Vision* The name "Pobuna" is a fusion of two identities: POBO, representing the Pobo community of Poka in Eredo Local Government Area of Lagos State, and UNA, signifying the United Native African Church Mission, now known as the First African Church Mission. This unique name carries the weight of history, symbolizing the strong partnership between the community and the mission in the pursuit of education. Pobuna’s story dates back to February 1960 with the establishment of Pobuna Grade 3 Teachers' Training College. Unfortunately, political disturbances in the Old Western State led to its closure in January 1965. However, the determination of the Pobo community never wavered. With persistent advocacy, the government of Lagos State, under the leadership of Governor Mobolaji Johnson, granted provisional approval in 1969 to reopen the institution as a secondary school. Thus, on February 20, 1970, Pobuna Secondary Grammar School was born, with Prince J.A.I. Adelakun as its pioneering principal. The school started as a community-owned institution before gaining government grant-aided status in 1975. In 1985, it was fully absorbed into the Lagos State public school system, merging with Imokun Community Grammar School, Noforija Community Grammar School, and Pobo Community Grammar School. This merger further strengthened the school’s structure and expanded its influence in the region. *The Builders and Pillars of Pobuna* Pobuna's establishment and growth would not have been possible without the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of its founding fathers. On the one hand, we pay tribute to the elders of the Pobo community, notably Papa Odusami, a renowned building contractor, Papa Arogundade, and Papa M.S. Odukomaiya, whose families generously donated the land upon which the school stands. On the other hand, we honor the UNA Mission, led by Worthy Brother E.A. Ogunbiyi, alongside prominent figures such as Late Chief S.A. Akinola, Mr. E.A. Akinde, and Late Mr. Winsala, whose visionary leadership played a crucial role in actualizing this institution. It is also impossible to mention Pobuna's early years without recognizing its first principal, Prince J.A.I. Adelakun, a graduate of Fourah Bay College, University College of Sierra Leone, in affiliation with Durham University, UK, and Moray House College, Edinburgh, UK. His tenure laid the foundation for a school built on discipline, academic rigor, and excellence. His successor, Mr. Ojikutu, continued this legacy when he took over in 1976. *Academic and Moral Excellence Through the Years* Pobuna Secondary Grammar School has consistently upheld high academic standards and moral integrity. Over the years, it has produced remarkable individuals who have excelled in various fields, including law, medicine, education, politics, business, and security services. The school’s commitment to excellence is evident in its outstanding academic performances, with a track record of over 95% success in BECE and an 83.5% pass rate in WASSCE. These achievements are a testament to the dedication of the school's leadership, teachers, and students. One of the school's proudest traditions is the Odusanmi Family Scholarship, which annually rewards the top three students in BECE and WASSCE, fostering academic competition and excellence. *The Evolution of Pobuna: Growth and Infrastructure* The school's journey of growth continued into the 21st century. On October 30, 2002, Pobuna Secondary Grammar School was divided into Junior and Senior Schools, each with its own administration and infrastructure. By January 6, 2003, the schools had appointed separate principals, marking a new era of expansion. Today, Pobuna continues to thrive, with ongoing projects such as the construction of a 12-classroom storey building, spearheaded by Hon. Wale Raji (MHR), further enhancing the school's learning environment. *Leadership Through the Years* The school has been privileged to have dedicated and visionary principals who have shaped its trajectory. Below is a list of the distinguished leaders who have steered the institution: Senior School Principals (Since 1970) 1. Prince Johnson A.I. Adelakun (1970-1976) 2. Mr. Ojikutu (1976-1980) 3. (2020-Present) *A Call to Integrity, Honesty, and Service* As we celebrate 55 years of educational excellence, I urge all Pobunans, past and present, to uphold the values that our school has instilled in us—Integrity, Honesty, and Service. We must be agents of positive change in Nigeria, rejecting corruption, greed, and dishonesty. The world needs ethical leaders, and as Pobunans, we have a duty to set examples in every field we find ourselves. We must also combat the rising tide of wickedness in society, including banditry, ritual killings, kidnapping, and cyber fraud. We must choose love over hatred, and selflessness over selfish gain. Let each of us be a blessing to our families, communities, workplaces, and nation. As alumni, let us support one another, ensuring that every Pobunan reaches their full potential. *A New Chapter Begins* Today, we celebrate not just our past but our future. Pobuna Secondary Grammar School has withstood the test of time, and with God's grace, it will continue to be a beacon of knowledge, discipline, and excellence. As I, Mr. Aboderin Joseph Abisoye, Principal of the Senior School, take my final bow after 34 years of meritorious service, I leave with immense gratitude. Serving Pobuna has been an honor, and I depart knowing that the school is in capable hands. On this note, I formally declare the 55th Anniversary Celebrations open! May Pobuna continue to shine brightly, and may we all prosper in the paths we choose. Thank you, and God bless Pobuna! God bless Nigeria! *Aboderin JA.*
