School History
The VTC is a training program born in needy times. The idea was born in the midst of Nigeria’s turbulent socio-political history when shutting down educational institutions by the then military regime was a common occurrence. An arts and crafts holiday workshop for the SOS Children’s Village community had been in place for some time. In 1995, the programme was opened to youths from Isolo community and was moved out of the village to a five-bedroom facility in the nearby LSDPC residential estate. The centre was actually named Community Training Centre this time, and courses were offered in shoemaking and leather works, sewing, arts and crafts, woodwork, secretarial and computer studies. In response to increasing popularity of the Centre’s programmes in the community, a permanent, purpose built, and well equipped facility comprising seven classroom/workshops, one staff common room, and one administrative office was completed and ready for use in December 1999. Following this landmark achievement, the National Office and Management of the VTC embarked on a programme upgrading exercise to ensure a more structured curriculum tailored to meet labour market requirements and special needs of the beneficiaries. Having consolidated the restructuring of the Centre’s training programmes and faculty, the Management sought and obtained in October 2001, a formal accreditation from the Lagos State Ministry of Education (Department of Private Education and Special Programmes). Today, about 149 trainees are receiving vocational and skill acquisition training in Catering Crafts, Dressmaking, Computer Studies, under a dedicated faculty of eight teaching and non-teaching staff.

Famous Past Pupils/Students

It is heart warming to witness the emotional and economic transformation in the lives of scores of young people who have benefited from the Centre’s training programmes. From a state of hopelessness and confusion about what to make of their lives, many beneficiaries of our programmes have become respectable members of their community. They are now economically self reliant and making meaningful contribution to the development of their community through the professional skills they have acquired. The following personal stories are typical of the positive changes taking place in the lives of our beneficiaries.Bukola OkeBukola, fondly called Bukky by her friends, enrolled for a diploma course in Secretarial Administration in 1998 at the age of 18 and graduated in November 2000. She is a brilliant, vivacious, and self motivated young lady with great potentials. However, Bukky came from a poor family living almost below subsistence level. The financial crisis was so severe that she would have dropped out from the training programe but for her unusual determination and support of Centre’s Management. Bukky’s efforts and determination paid off when she completed her training in flying colours. She immediately secured a job as Confidential Secretary in one of the big law firms in Lagos, from where she moved to another high profile law firm in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. She is well paid and highly respected by colleagues.Toyin OmotoshoToyin’s story is almost similar to that of Bukky, particularly on financial difficulties during the training. She was easily the most hardworking Catering trainee in her set. Toyin showed extra-ordinary devotion to work and passion for her vocation throughout the 12-month training. On completion of the programme, she immediately secured employment with La Baguette Limited, one of the biggest and most professional confectionery companies in Lagos area. Toyin reported that her salary and working
