School History
In the period before 5th April 1948 when the school was founded, there were enourmous challenges for Muslim children to obtain western education as the landscape was dominated by Christian schools. The yearnings of Muslims to acquire western education led to the establishment of Saka Tinubu Memorial (Ahmadiyya) High School at Olushi Street, Lagos on the 5th of April, 1948. It was the first Muslim secondary school in West Africa and was established under the auspices of Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam in Nigeria. The dream was actualised with the active involvement and generosity of the founding fathers: Alh. Saka Tinubu; Alh. Jubril Martins; Alh. Issa Williams; Alh. N.B. Kenku; Alh. Bakare Disu Oshodi; Alh. K.D. Oshodi; Alh. Fanimokun; Alh. Allison and others. (May Almighty Allah reward them with Aljannah Fridaos). The schools was started as a mixed school with Mr. J. Thompson Hagan, a Ghanaian as the first principal. Although the school was established to satisfy the yearnings of Muslims for higher education, the door was opened to non-Muslims without fear of losing their identities. This is in line with the Islamic injunction that there is no compulsion in religion, neither were non-Muslims denied any of their rights as members of the school community. By 1976, the founders changed the name Ahmadiyya College to Anwar-ul Islam College. Over the years, the school has produced eminent personalities and academics in all fields of human endeavour.
