School History
The name "Pobuna" is a fusion of two identities: POBO, representing the Pobo community of Poka in Eredo Local Government Area of Lagos State, and UNA, signifying the United Native African Church Mission, now known as the First African Church Mission. This unique name carries the weight of history, symbolizing the strong partnership between the community and the mission in the pursuit of education. Pobuna’s story dates back to February 1960 with the establishment of Pobuna Grade 3 Teachers' Training College. Unfortunately, political disturbances in the Old Western State led to its closure in January 1965. However, the determination of the Pobo community never wavered. With persistent advocacy, the government of Lagos State, under the leadership of Governor Mobolaji Johnson, granted provisional approval in 1969 to reopen the institution as a secondary school. Thus, on February 20, 1970, Pobuna Secondary Grammar School was born, with Prince J.A.I. Adelakun as its pioneering principal. The school started as a community-owned institution before gaining government grant-aided status in 1975. In 1985, it was fully absorbed into the Lagos State public school system, merging with Imokun Community Grammar School, Noforija Community Grammar School, and Pobo Community Grammar School. This merger further strengthened the school’s structure and expanded its influence in the region. Pobuna Junior Secondary Grammar School was established in the year 2003 out of the need to meet communities demand. Pobuna's establishment and growth would not have been possible without the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of its founding fathers. On the one hand, we pay tribute to the elders of the Pobo community, notably Papa Odusami, a renowned building contractor, Papa Arogundade, and Papa M.S. Odukomaiya, whose families generously donated the land upon which the school stands. It is also impossible to mention Pobuna's early years without recognizing its first principal, Prince J.A.I. Adelakun, a graduate of Fourah Bay College, University College of Sierra Leone, in affiliation with Durham University, UK, and Moray House College, Edinburgh, UK. His tenure laid the foundation for a school built on discipline, academic rigor, and excellence. His successor, Mr. Ojikutu, continued this legacy when he took over in 1976. Pobuna Secondary Grammar School has consistently upheld high academic standards and moral integrity. Over the years, it has produced remarkable individuals who have excelled in various fields, including law, medicine, education, politics, business, and security services. The school’s commitment to excellence is evident in its outstanding academic performances, with a track record of over 95% success in BECE. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of the school's leadership, teachers, and students.
